U.S. National Debt Clock

Up to the minute statistics you can use

For days the American public has been subjected to an astonishing spectacle of the United States Senate delving into the life of two teenagers 30 years ago. The Senate has a constitutional  duty to "Advise & Consent" on presidential treaties and appointments. They did not deliberate or advise. They did consent to the appointment of Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court just like they would have without "The Spectacle". Nothing changed and few ever thought it would. Was it, in Shakespeare's words, "Much ado about nothing"?

It wasn't about confirming a presidential appointment, but it wasn't about nothing either. It was a political clash reflecting a bitter divide within the US government. The purpose of "The Spectacle" was to extend and intensify that divide in the US citizenry just before an important election. It was powerful political theater designed to promote hatred and anger among the American people. Why would the United States Senate, want to do (or even allow) that?

Republicans control the Senate and the Judiciary Committee where the spectacle took place by a very slim simple majority. They could have stopped the drama anytime they chose but they didn't. They let it unfold as their opposition Democrats wanted. The November election will tell whether giving Democrats enough rope to hang themselves was a smart political move or not. But do take note, Kavanaugh is on the Supreme Court and the Democrats are exposed to the public for what they are.

That raises the next question: Exactly who is the Democrat constituency and what do they stand for or against? That was not apparent during "The Spectacle" of emotion and hatred. The underlying theme of their ideology seems to be strict government control of everything (including teenage folly and national vocabulary) but it is never explicitly stated. They trot out Marxist socialist ideology now and then but soon have to back away because it sounds good in theory but is disastrous in practice.

Who benefits from big, powerful, controlling government? I think the Congressman from El Paso identified the Democrat constituency 45 years ago. (See: Who Is Running This Mess?) Only the massive, faceless bureaucracy of government benefits. Everyone else loses.
